Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 (15 oz) can low-sodium black beans, rinsed and drained
  • ½ cup plain breadcrumbs
  • ½ medium yellow onion, finely chopped
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 tsp cumin powder
  • 1 tsp chili powder (adjust to taste)
  • 1 large egg (or 1 flax egg for vegan)
  • ¼ cup fresh cilantro, chopped (optional)
  • 4 burger buns (whole grain or white)
  • Toppings: sliced avocado, lettuce, etc.

Instructions

  1. Prepare the black beans by mashing them in a large bowl until mostly smooth but still chunky.
  2. In a skillet over medium heat, sauté chopped onions in olive oil until translucent. Add minced garlic and cook briefly.
  3. Combine mashed beans with sautéed onions in the bowl. Add breadcrumbs, spices, and egg (or flax egg), mixing until well combined.
  4. Divide the mixture into equal portions and form patties using wet hands to reduce sticking.
  5. Heat oil in a skillet over medium-high heat; cook patties for about 4-5 minutes on each side until golden brown and crispy.
  6. Assemble burgers with your favorite toppings and serve warm.
